In response to the first answerer….teaching students is a lot of work. not 12 months pay for 9 months work! Many times I was working at home grading papers and writing lesson plans. We have the time during the day to do that. Summer vacation as long as people think. Sure the days off are nice but I felt I earned those days off for the amount of work I did during the school year! Not only that but teachers are sometimes taking classes to learn new things during the summer. Not to mention they go back to school way before the students actually hit the classes.
BUT, to answer the real question…
nice to have holidays off where in other professions you get those days off. I know if there are other professional reasons, rather than personal, to be a teacher. I did it because I liked working with kids and I wanted to make a difference in that way.
You do learn a lot of parenting skills (if you previously a parent of your own kids) and also how to communicate with different kinds of people.
